Happy Sunday Reader Has anybody ever called you or texted you and just asked, "What are you doing right now???" What's your answer? Is it honest? Is it "nothing, why?" Let's be honest for a second. Nothing is an honest answer and a bullshit answer at the same time. Why do you ask why, though? Are you open to doing something more interesting? God forbid, maybe doing something more productive. Ask yourself the same question. What am I doing right now? Nothing, why? Why indeed. We've been doing this a month now. "Fine" that wasn't really fine. The Sunday hum you finally named instead of letting it stay a fog. "Busy" put on trial. Not being okay, and finding out that's not a malfunction, just a Tuesday for everybody, quietly. None of those mornings asked you to fix anything. They just asked you to look — to swap the vague version for the specific one, five words instead of a fog. Here's the part I haven't said outright yet: looking is only half of it. The other half is what you do once you've actually seen the thing. And that part has a clock on it, whether we admit it or not. There's a Van Halen song that's really just one idea, shouted: Right Now. Not eventually. Not once things calm down, once the kids are older, once it's a better time. Now, while you're actually looking at it. Shakespeare had the same idea four hundred years earlier, just dressed up better: "There is a tide in the affairs of men, which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries." Can't be a coincidence if Brutus and Sammy Hagar agree, can it? Different centuries, same warning: the window doesn't sit open forever waiting on you to feel ready. That's not pressure for pressure's sake — it's just true. The thing you named this month doesn't need you to solve it today. It needs you to stop letting "later" be the answer every single time it comes up. So: pick the one true thing you named this month, and do the next-sized thing about it today. Not the whole fix. Just the next thing, while the tide's still in. Keep the coffee hot. P.S. — Speaking of tides going out: last call on this week's bundle. The Site Survey Workbook + Not OK Today tee, 25% off automatically at checkout, closes tonight. If naming it is the first step, this is just a way to make the second one easier. After tonight it's back to full price until it rotates back around. Click here for that! |
Hi, I'm Mike.I believe the most important conversation you'll have this week is the one you have with yourself.Every Sunday, I send Sunday Morning Coffee—one honest story, one reflection, and one question worth carrying into your week. Along the way, we explore emotional honesty, relationships, parenting, personal growth, resilience, and finding the courage to be yourself. Pull up a chair. The coffee's on.
Coffee ready? I'm back home after a week away with the family. We spent the week on a Disney cruise we'd been planning for more than two years. Two years of deposits, reservations, schedules, anticipation, and making sure everything was in place. And now we're home. The suitcases need unpacking. The laundry has apparently reproduced while we were gone. The inbox is waiting, and Monday is standing outside the front door like a process server. Snap back to reality. Ope, there goes gravity. Last...
Coffee ready? I'm drinking mine in Florida this morning. We flew down yesterday, and tomorrow my family and I get on a Disney cruise. Today, we've given ourselves a beach day in Ft. Lauderdale. Life's not so short that you have to hurry. Life is actually long, and you should live as much of it as you can. Here's the part that surprises people: we booked this trip more than two years ago. Two years. Paying deposits on a week that's still two calendars away can feel a little silly. Planning a...
Coffee ready? Hey everybody. I've been thinking about course corrections this week. I've been doing some course correcting myself in fact. Remember all the shows where some guy didn't want to ask for directions, and ended up lost? I'm good with a little pride, but I also don't like wasting a bunch of time and gas. Sometimes you really don't know how lost you are, and sometimes you just don't want to look and find out. Usually that is me and my bank account after a trip to the casino. Ross...
