Coffee ready? It's funny how a morning can have an "oversleep" vibe, and your body knows it in your sleep and makes sure you do, in fact, oversleep. Thanks body! Here's something I notice on Sunday mornings, before the coffee's even done its job: a low hum in the background. Not quite dread, but in the family. The week's coming. Monday already has a shape, and I didn't pick all of it. In fact, if you are a "block time" person, then you'd say Monday already exists and already happened. You just haven't made it there yet to see how. Most Sundays I don't look straight at that hum. I let it stay a fog — a general "here we go again" — because a fog doesn't ask anything of me. It just sits there and turns the morning a little grey. But when I actually stop and ask what, specifically, I'm not looking forward to this week, the answer is almost always smaller than the fog. One conversation. One task I've been dodging. One hour on the calendar I wish wasn't there. Not the whole week — a piece of it. And a piece is something you can work with. The whole week isn't. So that's the check-in. Sometime before Monday, name the one thing you're actually dreading. Not the vague weight — the specific thing, in about five words. You might not be able to change it. But you'll have traded a fog you can't hold for a thing you can look at, and that trade is almost always worth making. Keep the coffee hot. -Mike P.S. Coffee ready? I'm back home after a week away with the family. We spent the week on a Disney cruise we'd been planning for more than two years. Two years of deposits, reservations, schedules, anticipation, and making sure everything was in place. And now we're home. The suitcases need unpacking. The laundry has apparently reproduced while we were gone. The inbox is waiting, and Monday is standing outside the front door like a process server. Snap back to reality. Ope, there goes gravity. Last...
Coffee ready? I'm drinking mine in Florida this morning. We flew down yesterday, and tomorrow my family and I get on a Disney cruise. Today, we've given ourselves a beach day in Ft. Lauderdale. Life's not so short that you have to hurry. Life is actually long, and you should live as much of it as you can. Here's the part that surprises people: we booked this trip more than two years ago. Two years. Paying deposits on a week that's still two calendars away can feel a little silly. Planning a...
Coffee ready? Hey everybody. I've been thinking about course corrections this week. I've been doing some course correcting myself in fact. Remember all the shows where some guy didn't want to ask for directions, and ended up lost? I'm good with a little pride, but I also don't like wasting a bunch of time and gas. Sometimes you really don't know how lost you are, and sometimes you just don't want to look and find out. Usually that is me and my bank account after a trip to the casino. Ross...
