Hi, I'm Mike.I believe the most important conversation you'll have this week is the one you have with yourself.Every Sunday, I send Sunday Morning Coffee—one honest story, one reflection, and one question worth carrying into your week. Along the way, we explore emotional honesty, relationships, parenting, personal growth, resilience, and finding the courage to be yourself. Pull up a chair. The coffee's on.

A Leaf on the Wind

Coffee ready? I'm back home after a week away with the family. We spent the week on a Disney cruise we'd been planning for more than two years. Two years of deposits, reservations, schedules, anticipation, and making sure everything was in place. And now we're home. The suitcases need unpacking. The laundry has apparently reproduced while we were gone. The inbox is waiting, and Monday is standing outside the front door like a process server. Snap back to reality. Ope, there goes gravity. Last...

Coffee ready? I'm drinking mine in Florida this morning. We flew down yesterday, and tomorrow my family and I get on a Disney cruise. Today, we've given ourselves a beach day in Ft. Lauderdale. Life's not so short that you have to hurry. Life is actually long, and you should live as much of it as you can. Here's the part that surprises people: we booked this trip more than two years ago. Two years. Paying deposits on a week that's still two calendars away can feel a little silly. Planning a...

Coffee ready? Hey everybody. I've been thinking about course corrections this week. I've been doing some course correcting myself in fact. Remember all the shows where some guy didn't want to ask for directions, and ended up lost? I'm good with a little pride, but I also don't like wasting a bunch of time and gas. Sometimes you really don't know how lost you are, and sometimes you just don't want to look and find out. Usually that is me and my bank account after a trip to the casino. Ross...

“Sunday Morning Coffee: letting go of the pressure to live up to your ‘potential’ and accepting that we all fail at being who we’re supposed to be.”

Coffee ready? You know how much I love getting lessons and teachable moments from movies, right? Things I can point out to the kids. A favorite moment for me is in Avengers: Endgame. When Thor is told by his mom that he's a failure, but not at what he thought. She tells him that everybody fails at being who we're supposed to be. We should instead try to succeed at being who we are. I think most of us have felt that feeling. When I was a kid, people told me I had "potential." Sounds like a...

Sunday Morning Coffee: turning emotional honesty into action, with blueprints, tools, and a home under construction symbolizing the move from survey to plan, build, and belong.

Yesterday, someone told me that I keep busy in response to my working on The Emotional Honesty Project across multiple platforms. The Grounds Crew in Patreon, the YouTube channel, the Emotional Support Gear website, The Honesty Equation (first book), and The Blueprint (upcoming second book). What's interesting about that statement, is it's never necessarily intentional to stay "busy." Certain things need to get done. I try to do them. Certain energies need to be expended. I try to expend...

Right now is the best time every time.

Happy Sunday Reader Has anybody ever called you or texted you and just asked, "What are you doing right now???" What's your answer? Is it honest? Is it "nothing, why?" Let's be honest for a second. Nothing is an honest answer and a bullshit answer at the same time. Why do you ask why, though? Are you open to doing something more interesting? God forbid, maybe doing something more productive. Ask yourself the same question. What am I doing right now? Nothing, why? Why indeed. We've been doing...

Hey everybody! Quick check in on this fine Sunday morning. Didn't sleep much last night, so today was definitely calling for the biggest coffee mug I own. It's my Luke's Diner mug that my oldest got me for Father's Day. Yes, that's a Gilmore Girls reference, and I'm proud to admit that I've seen every episode in first run. Loved it then and love it now. I'm making her watch it with me, and we're about halfway through season one currently. If any of you are friends with Lauren Graham, let her...

Busy. It's the answer that ends the question before anyone can push back.

Coffee ready? Well it's definitely been a week. Busy is the default these days. Even the days or times when nothing is happening feel busy too. I suppose the baseline is just moved to a higher place. Wife's birthday is coming up, though, so begins the arduous process of buying her a birthday gift. I think I got it covered, though! Here's a word I want to put on trial this week: "busy." Somebody asks how you're doing, or why you haven't called them back, or why the thing you said you'd start...

Monday already exists and has a vibe.

Coffee ready? It's funny how a morning can have an "oversleep" vibe, and your body knows it in your sleep and makes sure you do, in fact, oversleep. Thanks body! Here's something I notice on Sunday mornings, before the coffee's even done its job: a low hum in the background. Not quite dread, but in the family. The week's coming. Monday already has a shape, and I didn't pick all of it. In fact, if you are a "block time" person, then you'd say Monday already exists and already happened. You...

Sunday Morning Coffee. I'm Fine

Coffee ready? Is the coffee ready, and also, are you coffee ready? Why not! Just had Talley's 504 meeting with the school on Wednesday. Making some accommodations to add for STAR testing and possibly for PE class. Also, Talley is of course, everybody's favorite little girl. Also, every day big brother Miles holds her hand going up and down the entrance ramp cause he's a good big brother! Along with all the challenges also come great moments of joy and love. Our youngest was born 15 weeks...
